STRIVE MACHINE CRUNCH

STRIVE MACHINE CRUNCH (WITH CAM-SHIFT DROPSETS)

TARGET: UPPER ABS
Start: Place the machine’s cam setting at the Set 3 position—this provides more resistance at the beginning of the range of motion (ROM)— and choose a moderately heavy resistance on the weight stack. Sit erect with your back flat and grasp the handles overhead.
Execution: Rep out to failure by crunching your ribcage toward your pelvis. Immediately change the cam setting to the Set 1 position—this provides more resistance at the middle of the ROM—and rep to failure again. Immediately
change the cam setting to the Set 2 position— which provides more resistance at the end of the ROM—and rep to failure. That’s one set.

Gunnar’s take: “Sometimes when doing dropsets on a regular cam machine you’ll find that you still have something left, but not where the machine stresses you in the range of motion.
The Strive machine allows you to drop the cam setting without changing the weight, so you can eke out more reps without having to go lighter. This helps you get more out of every set.”
Gym-friendly version: The cam machines in most health clubs don’t feature adjustable varying resistance like Strive machines do. The best way to mimic this is on an old-school slantboard or adjustable decline bench.
Peterson suggests starting at the steepest decline and doing 10 reps, then dropping to a medium decline for 15 reps, then to the smallest decline for 20 reps.
